Product Description
Juniper Berries come from a shrub that can reach 1.80 meters in height. The berries take two or three years to ripen and are blue when picked. When they dry, they lose their blue color and turn to a dark color. The juniper berries give a marked and accentuated bittersweet taste, with a slightly peppery aftertaste.
Widely used in Northern Europe, especially in Scandinavia, they are an essential ingredient in gin.
When first produced in the Netherlands, they were initially developed as a medication, as juniper berries are thought to stimulate appetite. In Roman times, they were used as a substitute for black pepper, which was expensive when imported from India.
Only three or four berries are needed to enhance the flavor of the dishes and to emphasize the aroma and flavor, the berries must be crushed before using.
